Geneva and London, October 5, 2022 - In order to emphasize the role of finance and natural climate solutions in the lead-up to COP27, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Green Finance Institute (GFI) are collaborating to produce a special podcast series.
Financing Nature: COP27 Special, a five-part series, will raise awareness of the need for private funding to produce the nature-friendly results we urgently need for climate reduction and adaptation. The Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) Secretariat and Finance Lead, Climate Action Champions' Sagarika Chatterjee, will be featured in the first episode, which will air today, October 5, on television.
"UNEP has determined that a $4.1 trillion funding gap in nature needs to be closed by 2050 if the world is to reach its climate change, biodiversity, and land degradation commitments. The stakes are bigger than ever, thus the COP27 climate agenda must put biodiversity and nature first. According to Susan Gardner, Director of the UNEP's Ecosystems Division, Egypt offers a special chance to hasten the adoption of practical nature-friendly solutions for people, economies, and the welfare of future generations.
The amount of money being invested in nature preservation, restoration, and eco-friendly solutions is rising, but not at the rate necessary to address the interrelated challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.
"We can and must direct private capital toward environmentally friendly alternatives. Support from policymakers and regulators, catalytic funding, and financial innovation are all necessary for this. Financing Nature: COP27 Special, which will be held in advance of COP27 in Egypt, "will highlight instances where this is currently taking place and explore what we must all do in order to mobilize money at scale," according to Dr. Rhian-Mari Thomas, Chief Executive Officer of GFI.
Leading figures and examples of people implementing solutions locally will be featured in Financing Nature: COP27 Special. This comprises:
